This session will explore various roles of corporate counsel, such as legal advisor, risk manager, strategic advisor, compliance officer, C-suite member, and counsellor-in-chief to the chief executive officer and the board, and their challenges and opportunities faced by corporate counsel. The session will also identify how external counsels can provide added value and support to corporate counsel as they navigate the complexities of doing business in the modern world under the regulation of international behaviour through soft law, especially in the areas of business and human rights.

Charandeep Kaur

Charandeep Kaur is a senior member of the corporate practice group at Trilegal. Charandeep also heads the Delhi and Gurgaon offices of Trilegal and serves as a member on the Board of Trilegal.

Charandeep has over 2 decades of experience and leads Trilegal’s Japan practice. She regularly advises clients on complex and high-value mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, private equity investments, entry strategies as well as regulatory advise on intricate legal issues and structuring of foreign investments into India.

She acts as a strategic counsel for international brands on their India entry strategies as well as expansion plans.

Charandeep’s practice has accumulated a vast experience in cross border transactions in multiple sectors including Energy, Manufacturing, E-commerce, Logistics, IT & ITES, Automotives, Healthcare, and Hospitality.

She is a trusted legal advisor to leading Fortune 500 companies, international organizations, and has served on the board of prominent corporates including Uniqlo India.

Charandeep is a Council member of the SPPI Advisory Board of International Bar Association (IBA). She is also the Co-Chair of Cross-Border Investment Committee of the Inter Pacific Bar Association (IPBA).

Hiromi Furushima

Hiromi Furushima has over 10 years of experience as an in-house lawyer for pharmaceutical companies. She is currently the Director, International Legal at Alnylam Japan K.K., where she is responsible for legal affairs in Japan, Australia, and Taiwan.

She started her in-house legal career in 2011 when she joined Novartis Japan. During her 11 years in Novartis, she expanded her responsibilities, and served as Corporate Officer, General Counsel, and Head of Legal and IP for almost 7 years. Prior to joining Novartis, she worked at several law firms, focusing on technology and corporate transactions. She is admitted to the Japanese and California bars.
