The increasing abundance of information and the prosperity of the digital economy not only bring new opportunities for the economic development, but also pose an unprecedented challenge to the fight against IP infringement and counterfeiting. IP is by its nature international, this session brings together panelists from various countries to share their experience and insights on IP protection: how to ensure that the valuable IP rights are usable, and how to ensure that their value is preserved in the face of relentless infringement on an enormous scale.

Experience:
On 1 January 2016, Mr. Pan joined Reiz Law Firm as managing partner. Prior to this, he has accumulated extensive experience in legal related work. He joined Wang Jing & Co. as attorney at law in 1998 and practiced there till 2015 as partner, director of Shenzhen Branch. He worked in the Claims Department for AIU Insurance (a member of AIG) Guangzhou Branch until 1997, and between 1997 and 1998 as civil servant at the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Division of the Foreign Affairs Office, Shenzhen Municipal Government. From August to November 2004, he was interned at the United States District Court of Southern Illinois and at the offices of Keesal, Young & Logan in Long Beach, California.

Mr. Pan specializes in providing professional legal services for multinational companies in the PRC, with extensive experience in IP, M&A, corporate issues and dispute resolution. He has acted as legal counsel to companies on IP matters, advising on strategy and protection of intangible properties in China, and handling disputes and litigation of patents, know-how, copyright and trademark, such as the IP dispute between JDB and WLK (the biggest IP dispute in China up to date).

He has represented many clients in commercial arbitration and litigation, including disputes of international trade and PRC Customs matters. He has also given advice and attended several court hearings as expert witness on PRC law in commercial lawsuits, corporate law and international trade in Singapore and Hong Kong, UK, US and Russia.

He has been a speaker on IP law, commercial arbitration and litigation at numerous conferences and seminars, including several organized by the German, French, Italian, Japanese, Singapore and US chambers of commerce and in the annual meeting of England and Wales Law Society, IBA, IPBA and AIJA, NYBA, etc..

He has also published a number of essays including The TRIPS Agreement and IPR Laws of the PRC, A Guide to Commercial Contracts under Chinese Law, Court Clarifies Statute of Limitations for Civil Cases, Legal Aspects of PRC Domestic Transactions, Issues for Corporate Counsel in the Sale/Purchase of a Business, Enforcement of Arbitral Awards and Court Judgments in PRC, Mainland Courts to Enforce Hong Kong Judgments, and. Mr. Pan also co-edited and published the book "The German and Chinese Labor and Tax Law" in four languages including German, English, Chinese and Japanese with a German lawyer.

Jack Shaw

Jack Shaw is a partner at Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch LLP, which is the largest general-practice law firm based in San Diego, California. Jack is based at Procopio’s Palo Alto Office, which is located in the heart of Silicon Valley. Jack focuses on IP and commercial litigation, representing clients in many different industries, including electronics, semiconductors, software, Internet, media, mechanical, e-commerce, and chemical industries.

Jack represents U.S. clients as well as clients headquartered in Asia and Europe. Jack is admitted in State Bars of California and New York and registered to practice before the USPTO. Jack is also admitted to practice before the Federal Circuit and numerous U.S. federal district courts, including all federal courts in California and Texas as well the SDNY and EDNY.

Prior to his career as an attorney, Jack was an engineer at a large Silicon Valley high-tech company and as a research assistant at a photonics laboratory. Jack is also very involved with this local communities. He is a board member of the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Silicon Valley as well as a co-chair of its Pro Bono, Intellectual Property, Judiciary, and Data Privacy & Cybersecurity Committees.

Muhammad Farrukh Irfan Khan
