This session will examine the impact of the growing awareness of climate change in the transformation of the business landscape in favor of sustainable practices. At the same time, the speakers will question if climate change is, or should be, the main catalyst behind ESG practices when social and governance considerations shall also gain a seat in the table.

Vanita Bhargava

Vanita Bhargava is a Partner in the Dispute Resolution practice group of Khaitan & Co. Her fora of practice include the Supreme Court, High Court, National Green Tribunal, Mining Tribunal, National Company Law Tribunal and Quasi Judicial Tribunals. Vanita is an Advocate on Record in Supreme Court (since 2004). In her areas of practice, Vanita has advised and represented matters relating to Constitutional laws, Taxation Laws, Environment Laws, Civil Laws, Corporate Laws, Mining Laws, Forest Laws, Shareholder Disputes and Arbitration (Domestic and International), Banking Laws and Insolvency matters and others.

Vanita has been recognized and awarded as Star Women of The Year 2023 by Legal Era. She has also been recognised as Environment Lawyer of the year by The Women in Business Law Awards Asia 2022. Has also won the award for Litigator of the year by the Women in Business Law Awards Asia 2022 and was one of Asia’s Top 15 Female Lawyers 2022 by Asian Legal Business 2022. Vanita has been awarded as the Best Environment Lawyer of the Year by Global Legal Leader Awards 2021. She has been recognised and awarded for her work in Dispute Resolution practice area by The Legal 500 Asia Pacific, Legal Era, ALB. Ichiro Fujimoto

Mr.Fujimoto is an attorney-at-law, admitted in Japan, California and New York. He has more than 22 years’ experience in corporate law matters, especially in connection with cross-border matters.

Indeed he is an attorney of his law firm (Creativity & Insight LPC: 創知法律事務所 in Chinese characters), but he also serves as the chair and the representative director of Glome Holdings (Tokyo 8938). Through his experience as an attorney and as the director, he has learned Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) matters. Partly because, in these days, Japanese listed companies are legally required to disclose such ESG matters.

C. M. Chan

Mr. C. M. Chan has been elected President of The Law Society of Hong Kong since 2021. He was a member of the International Bar Association Corporate Social Responsibility Committee (2007 - 2012) and is a LAWASIA Executive Committee Member (since 2020). He also serves on a number of Hong Kong statutory bodies, including the Law Reform Commission.

Mr. Chan is qualified to practise as a solicitor in Hong Kong (1997) and England and Wales (2002). He has also passed the Greater Bay Area Legal Professional Examination (2021).

Mr. Chan graduated from the London Schools of Economics and Political Science (LLM), the University of Oxford (MBA) and Harvard University (MPA).

Mr. Chan is a Tax & Trust Lawyer and he also practises general commercial work. Mr. Chan has extensive experience in advising high net-worth clients and corporations in relation to their wealth and asset management, trust, succession, tax planning, compliance and charitable matters. He was an in-house legal adviser to Family Offices representing prominent families in Hong Kong. Mr. Chan is now a consultant of a Hong Kong law firm and a London law firm. He is also Chairman of a local charity focusing on promotion of environmental protection.

Saurav Kumar

Saurav is an equity partner with INDUSLAW with over 20 years of experience and specializes in mergers and acquisitions, strategic alliances, private equity investment, joint ventures and corporate governance.

He has advised multinationals, Indian public and private companies, funds and consulting firms on structuring complex inbound, out-bound, domestic and cross- border transactions. His work spans across several practice areas and sectors including technology, manufacturing, insurance, education, real estate, pharmaceuticals and the consumer internet.

Saurav, co-heads the Japan desk at INDUSLAW and has been instrumental in developing the Japan practice. He publishes the Japan newsletter on a bi-monthly basis at INDUSLAW to apprise his Japanese clients of recent legal developments in India. Saurav regularly speaks at seminars in Japan and has organised business legal seminars in collaboration with Embassy of India, in Tokyo, on several occasions.

Apart from Japan, Saurav has represented clients across multiple jurisdictions including the USA, the UK, France, the Middle East, Australia, Singapore and Korea.

Saurav has been recognised by leading publications including Asialaw, Legal 500, IFLR1000 and RSG India Report. Saurav has been listed in India Business Law Journal’s A-List of top 100 corporate lawyers in India for 2023 & 2022.
